Palmela, Cidade Europeia do Vinho em 2012- Palmela, European Wine City in 2012

Como já foi, aqui, publicado anteriormente. Uma cidade portuguesa será em 2012 a Cidade Europeia do Vinho. A localidade escolhida foi a vila de Palmela. A eleição decorreu em Vila Franca del Penedes, Espanha.




A candidatura de Palmela foi escolhida de entre 6 cidades portuguesas concorrentes: Barcelos, Beja, Cantanhede, Cartaxo e Viana do Castelo.
Este evento vai permitir a divulgação, a nível nacional e internacional, da região como referência na produção de vinho ,bem como todas as actividades relacionadas com este sector como o Enoturismo ou provas de vinhos e divulgação de toda a gastronomia da região.
A iniciativa Cidade Europeia do Vinho realiza-se anualmente num país diferente, que integre a Rede Europeia de Cidades do Vinho. Para 2012 Portugal foi o país escolhido para acolher este certame. Em 2013 será a vez da Itália, em 2014 será escolhida uma cidade espanhola e em 2015 uma cidade francesa.
A produção de vinho ma região de Palmela é anterior à fundação de Portugal. Pensa-se que terá sido introduzida pelos tartéssios, na Península Ibérica- Vale do Tejo – por volta de 2000 a.C. , que à medida que estabeleciam relações comerciais, iam trocando diversos produtos , entre os quais o vinho.




No século VII a.C. foi a vez dos gregos darem o seu contributo, para o desenvolvimento da cultura viticultura na região de Palmela, desenvolvendo a “arte de fazer vinho”.




Os Celtas no século VI a.C., introduziram variedades de videira e trouxeram consigo as técnicas da tanoaria.




Os romanos, em 15 a.C. com a romanização da Península estabilizada, também desenvolveram a cultura da vinha introduzindo novas variedades de uva, aperfeiçoaram técnicas de cultivo, de onde se destaca a poda.
Em 1185, D. Afonso Henriques atribui o primeiro foral à Vila de Palmela onde refere a produção de vinho na região.

No século XIX várias pessoas se destacaram na viticultura palmelense levando-a ao reconhecimento nacional e europeu. É o caso de José Maria dos Santos, à época  o proprietário da maior vinha do Mundo. Localizada no Poceirão, tinha uma área de 2400 hectares, 6 milhões de cepa que produziam anualmente 20 a 30 mil pipas de vinho.

No século passado, D. Gregório Gonzalez Briz, implanta o mais moderno sistema de vinificação em Portugal. Situado em Algeruz onde se situa actualmete o Núcleo Museológico do Vinho e da Vinha.

As Denominações de Origem e os Encepamentos

A Região Vitivinícola da Península de Setúbal desdobra-se em três denominações distintas: a D.O.C. Palmela, a D.O.C. Setúbal e o Vinho Regional Terras do Sado.

É uma região dominada pelas castas tintas, com cerca de 80% do encepamento total. No concelho de Palmela a casta castelão – mais conhecida na região por «Periquita» - ocupa 95% da área de tintas; no entanto, para além de outras castas nacionais, assinala-se a entrada de outras como Chardonnay, Babernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Blanc e Pinot Noir e Blanc.
Quanto às castas brancas, as mais representativas na região continuam a ser a Fernão Pires, a Tamarez e a Moscatel de Setúbal, sendo esta última responsável pelo vinho generoso conhecido com o mesmo nome.

As has been here previously published on portuguese town will be the European City of Wine, on 2012. The location chosen was the town of Palmela. The election took place in Vila Franca del Penedes, Spain.
The application of Palmela was chosen from among six competitors portuguese cities: Barcelos, Beja, , Cantanhede, Cartaxo  and Viana do Castelo.
This event will allow the dissemination at national and international reference in the region as wine production, as well as all activities related to this sector such as wine tourism or wine tasting and display all this region’s gastronomy.
The initiative of the European City Wine is held annually in a different country, integrating the European Network of Cities of Wine. In 2012 Portugal was chosen to host this event. In 2013 it was the turn of Italy, in 2014 a Spanish city will be chosen and in 2015 a French city.
Wine production is ma de Palmela region before the foundation of Portugal. Thought to have been introduced by Tartessians, Iberia, Tagus Valley - around 2000 BC, that as business relations, were exchanging various products, including wine.
In the seventh century BC was the time of the Greeks give their contribution to the development of culture viticulture in the region of Palmela, developing the "art of making wine."
The Celts in the sixth century BC, introduced varieties of vine and brought with them the techniques of cooperage.
The Romans in 15 BC  with Romanization stabilized in the Peninsula, also developed the vineyard introducing new grape varieties, improved cultivation techniques, where stands pruning.
In 1185, D. Afonso Henriques assigns the first charter to the town of Palmela which refers to wine production in the region.
In the nineteenth century many people stood out in  Palmelense viticulture, taking it to the National and European recognition. This is the case of José Maria dos Santos, at the time the owner of the largest vineyard in the world. Located in Poceirão, had an area of 2400 acres, 6 million strain annually  that produced 20 to 30 thousand barrels of wine.

Designations of Origin and vine varieties
The wine region of Setúbal Peninsula unfolds in three distinct names: the DOC Palmela, the D.O.C. Setubal and Regional WineTerras do Sado.

As for the white varieties, the most representative in the region remain to Fernao Pires,Tamarez and Moscatel de Setúbal , the last being responsible for the fortified wine known by the same name.
