Esta iniciativa pretende dinamizar cidades sem grande tradição no sector do vinho e as actividades a ele ligadas como a gastronomia e o Enoturismo. A eleição da próxima Cidade do Vinho implicará a aplicação de determinadas normas a nível nacional o envolvimento de todos os actores, como municípios, restaurantes, museus e outros actores culturais com o objectivo de criar um produto turístico.
O anúncio desta iniciativa foi feito em conjunto pelo presidente da RECEVIN, José Arruda e pelo Vice-Presidente da Câmara Municipal do Cartaxo, Paulo Varanda, na Feira Nacional Agricultura que se realizou em Santarém no dia 9 de Junho de 2011.

The first European City of Wine will be Portuguese.Next year, in 2012, Portugal will have a European City of Wine. The decision was taken by the European Network of Cities of Wine, which is the Portuguese President José Arruda. The release included the City will only be made in November this year, Estrasbrugo.
