Located in the middle of the Troia Peninsula, overlooking the Serra da Arrábida, with a beach about 18 km, are the Roman ruins of Troia Complex fish-salting to 2000 years. These Roman ruins were opened for one year is a route accessible to persons with disabilities.
The Roman ruins of Troia were classified as a National Monument in 1910. But in the eighteenth century has aroused the interest of the Infant Maria (D.Maria I), later in the start of her reign of the excavations being regarded, at present, the first Portuguese archeological zone.
Setúbal has always had a proiminent salting industry, not only by the salt located there but also by the abundance and quality of his fish for which this city has always been known. The Phoenicians first and the Romans after ,they realized the potential that the area of the estuary of Sado had regarding the industry of salting and fish conservation.
It was about 2000 years there was built the largest complex of salting fish conservation of the Roman world known today.
At the complex can be observed the facilities that reached to our present: Residential area, salting workshops, spa, several necropolises, a mausoleum and a aquarian route early Christian basilica.
This space can be seen some archaeological findings such as ceramics, pottery, amphorae and fish bones (sardines).
The recovery of this area results from a protocol signed between the IGESPAR and Sonae (owner of the land where the ruins are located)and that led to the reopening of the ruins to the public 20 years after closure..
The creation of this route was in charge of landscape architect Hipólito Bettencourt. Francisco Providência is responsible for the design of explanatory panels, signage and other elements of disclosure. Inês Vaz Pinto led the team of archaeologists involved in the excavations of the ruins
It is also noted that the existing route is 450 meters in the ruins and is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
